For your website to do any good, other people need to be able to see the files that make up your website. These files, whether they are HTML webpage files, images, videos, sounds, animations, documents, CSS stylesheets, scripts, programs, etc. need to be stored on a fast computer that's running all the time and connected to the internet. We call this a web server because it "serves" the website to other people. A web host is a company that provides this computer in a data centre so that everyone can access your website. So basically, these servers cost money to purchase, configure, maintain, and need a fast and costly connection to the Internet. When we design your website, we upload the files to a web server so that other people on the Internet can see it by simply entering the address to your website - just like how you you likely got to this page.

If you're reading this page online, whether you know it or not you are already using domain names. There are millions of web servers (see above) connected to the Internet, and each of them need to have their own address. However, this address is in numerical format, called an Internet Protocol address. Chances are you've visited http://google.com, but the domain name "google.com" really just points to http://66.249.80.104 - but chances are you have a much easier time remembering "google.com" than 66.249.80.104. Basically, a domain name is just a technical term for the simple name of a site (google.com) that relates to the hard to remember IP address. Every website we design has it's own domain name.
